    Who we are
The NILS scheme is a Federal Government endorsed program to help those on a very low income. We provide no interest, fee-free loans for essential items, the intention being to alleviate financial stress rather than create unmanageable debt.   NILS are there to help families in need
The local office has two functions a) to provide loans to residents in the eastern Dandenong Ranges and b) to be a centre for other NILS branches servicing the whole region.
Cockatoo is administered by a co-operative of community organisations and manned by a team of local people, most of whom are volunteers. Some of our families are on their third or fourth loan - a testimonial that speaks far louder than words.
Now a nation-wide scheme, nearly 400 community organisations in 600 locations have come together to form groups at the local community level to process applications and manage the repayment program: In the last 6 months alone we have made 11,756 loans worth $10.8m. It is Australia's largest microfinance network. 'Good Money' shopfronts are a part of this program, now in nearby Dandenong   Details
Where do the funds come from?
NILS is administered nationally by Good Shepherd Microfinance. The Federal Government provide some of the costs of administration and the National Australia Bank provide the loans free of charge. Other philanthropic trusts also generously help provide this service.  - More details
